Angkor Wat Half Marathon: Siem Reap - 3 Days / 2 Nights

Engage in meaningful causes and discover Cambodia’s archaelogical splendors at the same time in our 3-day Angkor Wat Half Marathon package, specially designed for running and travel enthusiasts. Taking place on 6 December, the Angkor Wat Half Marathon is an international charity event that raises funds for landmine victims in the country. During the marathon, run past the ancient temples and gain a unique perspective of this renowned site. This amazing package also features a relaxing post-run massage and opportunities to sample Khmer cuisine and explore the iconic Angkor temples on the non-marathon days.

Day 1 - 5 December 2009: Arrive Siem Reap (D)

Arrive in Siem Reap, the gateway to the fabled temples of Angkor. Meet your English speaking local guide, who will accompany you to your hotel for check in.

This afternoon, start your visit to the temples of Angkor by local tuk tuk at Ta Prohm temple, built in the mid 12th to early 13th centuries. Ta Prohm is unique in that it has been left largely as it was found - overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground. This makes Ta Prohm one of the most picturesque and memorable of the Angkor temples.

Now you are ready to visit the biggest religious temple in the world: the magnificent Angkor Wat Temple. Built by Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat was constructed to symbolize Mount Meru, home of the gods. Considered the masterpiece of the Khmer architecture, this Vishnuite temple was the King's funerary temple. Inside the temple the walls are covered by carvings and bas-reliefs depicting the Hindu mythology and the wars Suryavarman II fought during his reign. Stay at this magical place until the sun sets and witness how the warm evening light changes the appearance of the 2000 apsara dancers decorating the temple.

A delicious pre-marathon dinner will be served at Selantra Restaurant.

Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 3 - 7 December 2009: Siem Reap - Departure (B)

This morning, visit the ancient city of Angkor Thom. This was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII. This city is surrounded by an 8 m high wall, with each side of the city being 4 km long, drawing a perfect square. You will enter the city from the ancient South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with elephants and four giant faces. On each side of the entrance path, a row of 54 gods or demons is holding the sacred Naga snake.

From here, continue to Bayon Temple in the exact center of the city. This 12th century masterpiece is a study in grandeur. The exterior gallery walls have extensive, superb bas-reliefs, particularly the East and South Galleries. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also must-visits as they are both known for their intricate bas-reliefs.

Return to the hotel and enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure. Transfer to the Airport for your departure flight.
